Please reach us at info@HotToTrotMobile.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
We recommend consulting with your veterinarian before starting your dog on any fitness program. We will need a copy of your dog’s current vaccination records to include rabies. All of our canine clients must be at least six months old to workout on the slatmill.
Before we arrive, please give your dog a potty break and get them harnessed and leashed up for their session. If they do not have a harness, we will provide one for use during their session. If your dog is aggressive please muzzle before we arrive.
Please make sure any feedings are to take place at least two hours before their sessions are to begin to avoid upset stomachs, full bowels, or bloat.
Do not allow your dog to drink water at least 30 minutes before your session begins.
Once we arrive, please bring your dog outside to the mobile dog gym for their session; unless you are not home for the scheduled time, we will collect them.
We first start with getting your dog comfortable being on the Slat Mill Treadmill. This introduction is the first and most important step so your dog starts to gain confidence in learning a new technique. Once your dog has gained confidence on the treadmill, we will start to have them walk and continue to build towards their goal of running. Many dogs will quickly learn to trot and become more confident.
As your dog’s confidence continues to build, we will increase your dog’s pace to give them a fun-filled session. We will use positive motivation and toys to gain the most for your dog. The exercise will be done in bursts throughout the time of your session, in order to get the most out of it. While your dog is enjoying their new activity, they will be gaining health and mental benefits.
We call it Zonked!
Your dog may be sprawled out on the cool floor and pant for some time after their session. They just had a good workout!
We suggest offering water in smaller amounts so your dog doesn't consume an entire bowl at once and potentially vomit. Wait until their heart rate slows before feeding.
Some dogs get the zoomies (a burst of energy) after their session, that’s normal, too. They just had a good workout and their endorphins and adrenaline are pumping. Once their heart rate slows down and they relax, the energy will burn off.
For unconditioned or older dogs, we recommend giving their hind legs a nice rubdown to release lactic acid and help prevent soreness the next few days. Who wouldn’t like a little doggie massage after a workout?
For dogs that are conditioned we recommend twice weekly sessions on the treadmill with a few days in between for recovery. All other dogs will benefit once per week until they build strength and endurance.
We prefer for you to be home until your dog is confident with the exercise sessions. After we have determined they are ready, we can arrange for your dog’s workout even when you’re not home.
